watch

In today’s article we will talk about how to manage time during the JEE examinations. You can also use the following to test when u solve mock papers as well.

First and foremost, you should be absolutely clear on which subject are you going to approach first. And quite basically, you need to attempt the subject you are really strong in. The basic idea behind it is, what you are good at, u can do it fast. Time is of the essence, and when you manage to finish one subject satisfactorily, you will be fairly relaxed for the latter two.

If we compare the state level CETs to the JEE in terms of the paper structure, what we observe is in JEE although the questions are on a tougher side, the marks per question are more as well. JEE focusses on quality aspect of the questions and answers. Nobody actually solves 100% of the JEE questions correctly and completely. Accuracy of the number of questions you solve is of paramount importance.

Regarding actually attempting JEE, you need to come up with a system within yourself. As you read the question to be solved, in your mind you should know, 1. Whether to solve the question right away, 2. whether to mark that question for review later, or 3. whether to omit that question and move on to the next. This is possible with practice. The biggest advantage of this is, in your first run through the question paper, you would have solved a considerable chunk of the paper at one go, and would have a definitive target of questions that need review and some time to solve. Also, you would be relatively stress-free about completing the paper as the things you know for sure are been marked.

The Importance of Time Management (Part 3 of 3)

You can read the previous article about Time Management while studying and preparing for JEE in the next link.

https://mkclindia.wordpress.com/2013/12/24/the-importance-of-time-management-part-2-of-3

In this article, we will discuss about Time Management while appearing for JEE, or while practicing and solving mock tests.

First and foremost, there are no hard and fast rules pertaining to Time Management while solving papers. It’s all about what you are comfortable with and what brings the best out of you.

To get an idea about which time management approach works for you, there is only one way. PRACTICE! You will need lots and lots of practice to know for yourself what works for you the best. As you practice, never shy away from trying new things. Trial and Error approach is definitely workable. For instance, you could experiment over which section to solve first, do you need to time each section, or stick to it till u finish, or to do all the easy ones first, and then revisit for the difficult ones, etc. These different variations would give you a fair idea as to what is making you the fastest for a given accuracy. And that is the time management trick you shall use for solving the JEE.

Yet another dimension to this exercise is to practice using preset approaches. For example, try solving a practice or mock test using a following approach. Solve all the questions which u feel are easy as per your preparation and are confident about them. This would mean that you would solve those questions fastest. That means you could have then solved a major chunk of the question paper very fast. That gives you ample time to ponder over the remaining questions and crack them. Another approach would be solving the paper section wise completely before moving to the next section. You shall have to practice enough using all the approaches to know what works better for you.

Following are some important tips to be followed while solving the test:

  • Always remember: Accuracy comes first, Speed comes second.
  • It is perfectly okay to solve slightly fewer questions faultlessly.
  • Keep calm while reading the question paper. Do not start thinking about the result just yet. Do not get over excited or depressed by the nature of the question paper.
  • It is advisable to use time in chunks. Do not check the clock after each question because that might make you more nervous.
  • You can just mark the answers in the answer sheet and keep on solving, and then use the last 10 minutes to highlight the answers and shade the OMR area. This point is not applicable for the online tests.
  • Try and use the rough paper when required. Make it a habit of doing rough work clearly. Just in case you have to revisit the rough work later, it should be legible and not some unreadable scribbles.
  • Keep track of the time; the target is to cover as much as you can accurately.
  •  Review whether you have marked the answers correctly. Don’t haste and panic.

To conclude, practice is very important. Solving as much as tests as possible will help you to hone your time management skills.

You can read the Part 1 of this series of articles at the following link.

In the last article, we discussed the importance of Time Management and also its advantages. We took a bird-eye view of the subject at hand. Time Management constitutes of two parts; Time Management while studying and preparing, and Time Management while solving mock tests and appearing for JEE. In today’s article, we shall discuss about Time Management while studying and preparing.

Good Study Habits

Studying and preparing for JEE won’t be much of a task once you are habituated to it. Inculcating good studying habits is important. You can do the following and improvise upon them.

  1. Plan effectively for the time you have. Set up a generous schedule considering all the instances you would be occupied. Include college, classes, sleep, meal times, etc. Dedicate a studying time in that schedule.
  2. Plan for the study time in a way that you could concentrate and focus at a stretch. Keep this dedicated studying slot in the morning if you are a morning person or at night if you feel comfortable with it. The main objective here is to get undisturbed quiet time.
  3. Having dedicated a studying time, now it’s time to study. When you sit to study, prepare a To-Do list. This list shall enlist the things you want to cover in the session. That would give you an outline to follow. This will help you study better in a planned and organized way.
  4. Create a planner style document and write down what you do, and your studying plans. This will keep you on the track as well as give you a fair idea as to how you measure up against your own expectations.

Managing Priorities

Always prioritize the tasks as per their importance. Analyze beforehand the urgency and importance of a task in your To-Do list. It’s absolutely important that you decide to work on the things that have the biggest impact, and not because it’s easy. Understand the difference between important and urgent. Important tasks must be done; urgent tasks must be done NOW. Some things can be taken care of tomorrow, later this week, or next week. Here, important tasks would be studying a chapter, finishing a deadline on an assignment, preparing for a test, etc.

Keep in mind that today’s actions will plant the seeds for your long-term success. Take a minute off your schedule, and ponder over the thought of prioritizing a task and its effects on your preparation. Ask yourself, “What positive things might happen if I make this a top priority?”

Remember: Procrastination is your biggest enemy

Procrastination is your biggest enemy. Be sure about that. Procrastination is basically putting off work. It is about not doing things when they are due and waiting till the last moment and beyond. Waiting for the deadline to come up on a test or an assignment, and then waking up frantically is called procrastination.

The worst impact that procrastination would have is on your study schedule. It disturbs the flow and the plan. The work starts piling up. The last minute stress is consuming physically as well as emotionally. Agreed that you might even complete the task in time, but procrastination would cause the quality to take a hit.

The best way to curb procrastination is sticking to the plan. If you get an assignment, plan when you want to do it, and ultimately stick to it. Plan in advance. Plan for each test you would be taking, plan for each assignment that you would be working on.

Review and Revise

Do include time for reviewing and revising your studies in the timetable. Reviewing would help you know for yourself how effective you have been while studying. It would help you identify the gaps and improvising. Time Management is learnt and perfected over time, and such reviews would contribute significantly. Revising in a timely manner helps save time over a period as you won’t have a huge load of studies to be revised.
